Well, someone has to win it, and why not do the double for the first time. And therefore, a mere seven days after taking one British Club title, PL claimed their second - Top British Youth Club 2009.

Underlined with an incredible 25 medals (12 gold, 10 silver & 3 bronze) at the six-day meet at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, PL were to beat the next British Club (City of Leeds) by well over 100 points, with the Canadian guest team from Alberta still trailing some 60 points in the Leander wake.

You want to know where those 25 medals came from right?....

With Achieng Ajulu-Bushell and Christian Homer only able to complete two days of racing before heading off to Rome to join Emma Wilkins for the World Championships, there were still some remarkable firsts for the UK's leading swimming programme

Firsts. The time makes her the fastest 15 year old in the world this year. And the heartache of not making the GB team for the World's didn't do Antony James any harm as he ripped through the opposition to set scintillating times to win the 50m Butterfly (23.74) and 100m Butterfly (51.92), the second swim missing the British Senior record by less than 24 hours

David Gregory returned from the European Junior Championships with the bit well and truly between his teeth as the PL lionheart smashed his way to victory in the 15/16 years 100m Backstroke (56.90), 200m Backstroke (2:03.34) and 400m IM (4:25.36), the latter also resulting in a fantastic Senior bronze. It was therefore particularly pleasing for the PL coaches to see their team beat Stockport in ten of the fourteen senior events.

The Plymouth honours were not to stop with the coveted League Cup; the Relay challenge trophy was also to go the way of the PL ‘blue army’, some 29 seconds clear of their nearest rivals in the accumulated times of the eight relays. The Top Male Performance at the meet was awarded to Antony James’ 53.55 to win the Open 100m Butterfly, whilst Sam Straughan was also to win the Top Male athlete in the 15 years age group.

With this being the 40th year of the competition, to break six meet records was also a significant achievement from the Plymouth team. Both the Male 13 years 200m Medley and Freestyle relay meet best times were obliterated, one of which had stood since 1992, whilst the Male 15 years meet records were also taken in the two relay events. Antony James’ aforementioned Butterfly performance was to take 0.45 off James Hickman’s 2001 standard, whilst Sam Straughan’s 58.91 sliced 0.71 off Luke Wood’s 2007 mark in the 15 years 100m Backstroke.

With 22 wins across the 50 events, Plymouth Leander Head Coach Jon Rudd was clearly delighted with his team’s efforts. “To win the most significant team event in domestic swimming for a second successive year is a very special achievement for us. Our swimmers work hard and work smart and are always up for one of the few competitions were it’s about ‘us’ as a unit. We are a tight knit group of individuals in this regard. Our opponents were both strong and hungry and that makes this result all the more credible”.

Rudd went on to say, “I believe that our coaching team is arguably the best in the country. I simply lead a team of very talented and dedicated coaches without whom this programme would not flourish and be where it is today. The support extended to us by Plymouth College is also second to none and this victory is as much theirs as it is Plymouth Leander’s.”

Ambitious young athletes with National and International aspirations (aged 11–18 years) can apply for substantial swimming and education scholarships with Plymouth College and Plymouth Leander via here and full results of the meet can be found here

The National Swimming League 40th Cup Final 2009
1. PL were to have six athletes selected to compete at the meet from five different nations, with Calum Jarvis (Wales) joined by David Gregory (England), Grant Halsall (Isle of Man) and Heather Millar (Isle of Man) also taking great International experience from the occasion. Achieng Ajulu-Bushell (Kenya) and Christian Homer (Trinidad & Tobago) opted to decline their country’s selections due to academic commitments.

All six of the PL athletes are swimming scholars in the highly successful Plymouth Leander/Plymouth College swimming scholarship programme. The four-day meet was held in an outdoor venue and under stressful conditions, including rats in the accommodation and the actual site for the Games still under construction during the Opening Ceremony.

Calum’s silver was to come courtesy of the Welsh 4 x 200m Freestyle relay, in which he anchored the quartet to their medal behind Australia. Earlier in the meet he had just missed an individual medal in the 200m Backstroke (2:06.44) for fourth and agonisingly hit the same position again in the 100m Backstroke (58.87). Personal best timse in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle were also encouraging swims for the young hopeful.

David Gregory’s international debut was also a successful affair. Having to withdraw from Great Britain’s End of Year Tour to Australia in 2007 through a back injury had driven Dave to his first actual international cap as he competed in several finals for England throughout the meet. Fifth spot in the 100m Backstroke (59.20) was followed up with sixth in the 200m IM (2:10.65) and eighth in the 200m Backstroke (2:09.99). Dave was also to lead off the England 400m Medley relay with an inspired 58.99 Backstroke leg, inside the time of his individual final swim in this event, typical of his lionhearted nature.

Heather Millar was unable to put a foot wrong in Isle of Man colours as she swam to personal best times in all of her events, her highest position being eleventh in the 200m Freestyle. Grant Halsall was also to just miss out on finals, finishing as reserve for the 200m Backstroke final.

Full results for the meet can be found here
http://www.plymouthleander.co.uk/trackback.php?id=2008110515272643 Emma Ready For Senior British Test At 2008 European Short Course! http://www.plymouthleander.co.uk/article.php?story=20081028211058845 http://www.plymouthleander.co.uk/article.php?story=20081028211058845 Tue, 28 Oct 2008 21:10:58 +0000 http://www.plymouthleander.co.uk/article.php?story=20081028211058845#comments General News
Rijeka, Croatia: It’s been a rollercoaster ride for Emma Wilkins since her major breakthrough at the British Championships in April of this year and it hasn’t stopped yet with the announcement that she will form part of the British team that will travel to the LEN European Short Course Championships from 11th – 14th December in Rijeka, Croatia.

Emma, who is sponsored by Wilkinsons Stores, will feature amongst a large British contingent, including thirteen British athletes from the Beijing Olympics, all appreciating that this is the starting point on their journey towards London 2012.

Having just missed out on Olympic selection for the Beijing 400m Freestyle relay, (Emma finished sixth in the 100m Freestyle at the Trials and GB took five athletes to the Games), Emma was a finalist at the World Junior Championships in Monterrey, Mexico during July alongside fellow PL stars Zoe Hester and Achieng Ajulu-Bushell.
